Baluchari Saree Factory

On our way out of Bishnupur, we stopped by a Baluchari Saree Factory.

Baluchari sarees are hand woven silk sarees, with intricate designs, usually based on miniature paintings of India.

The “factory” (more like a sweatshop) is this one room unit.
And, the final product looks like this (click on photo below to see the details of the workmanship),

Each saree can take upto 3 weeks to make. Whilst the final product is very detailed (and appealing to those who know) what is bad, is the exploitation of labour (not to mention also ‘child’ labour). I doubt if these workers are paid any more than 1000 rupees (approx US$ 25) a month, where each saree goes on to sell at around US$ 300.
